Cast books looking for a new home

I have a bunch of Cast series TPBs that I'm looking to rehome. (If they don't find new homes via the internet, they're off to Goodwill.) Full info over on my journal post!

Fanfic and fanmix; reread project?

Sun, 04 Nov 2012 22:18:29 GMT

Posted by: ambyr

I wrote a couple Sun Sword stories for Kaleidoscope this year. I get the feeling most of you have seen them already, but just in case:

Women's Words (4605 words) by ambyr
Fandom: Sun Sword - Michelle West
Rating: General Audiences
Relationships: Diora en'Leonne/Valedan kai di'Leonne
Characters: Diora en'Leonne, Teyla en'Leonne, Alina di'Lamberto, Kiriel di'Ashaf, Valedan kai di'Leonne
Summary: "It is said the correspondence of Serras is beneath the interest of Tyrs."

Lessons (2418 words) by ambyr
Fandom: Sun Sword - Michelle West
Rating: General Audiences
Characters: Teresa di'Marano, Lissa en'Caveras
Summary: She is no longer the Serra Teresa, but the lessons of a lifetime are difficult to set aside.

And, outside of Kaleidoscope, I put together a Sun Sword fanmix:

Make Them Hear You (381 words) by ambyr
Fandom: Sun Sword - Michelle West
Rating: General Audiences
Characters: Diora en'Leonne
Summary: Diora's journey, from the fall to the rise of the clan Leonne. (Streaming link included.)

Reviewing canon for all this made me realize how much I'd like to do a chapter-by-chapter reread and discussion for the series. Would anyone else be interested in something like that?

Silence blurb, and ARC to win!

Fri, 17 Feb 2012 07:51:28 GMT

Posted by: starlady

con_or_bust is the Carl Brandon Society's annual fundraiser to send fans of color to SFF cons in the United States. This year DAW has donated a number of ARCs to the auction, including one of Michelle Sagara's new book (first in a trilogy) Silence:

Description:

It began in the graveyard. Ever since her boyfriend Nathan died in a tragic accident Emma had been coming to the graveyard at night. During the day she went through the motions at her prep school, in class, with her friends, but that’s all it was. But tonight was different. Tonight Emma and her dog were not alone in the cemetery.
There were two others there—Eric, who had just started at her school, and an ancient woman who looked as though she were made of rags. And when they saw Emma there, the old woman reached out to her with a grip as chilling as death….

Go here to bid on the ARC--bidding ends Sunday, February 25, 2012 at 11:59 p.m. EST; more information.

The prologue and first chapter of Skirmish were apparently already available on Google Books; you can download them at this link as well. The book is out now; I know some people in this comm are already reading it, you lucky ducks.

In the meantime, Yuletide 2011 has yielded one Elantra story, with spoilers for Cast in Ruin.

Happy Gregorian New Year, all.

2012: the year of three Sagara/West books

Fri, 05 Aug 2011 14:53:50 GMT

Posted by: starlady

Not only is the next House War book, Skirmish, due in January, and Cast in Peril in mid-autumn, but the first book in a new YA trilogy, Silence, is coming from DAW in May 2012.

I think this qualifies as a windfall, no? \o/

Huntbrother + other West novellas coming to e-book formats

Wed, 13 Jul 2011 15:16:59 GMT

Posted by: starlady

I imagine everyone is aware of this by now, but just to mention that Michelle has begun the process of making her short stories available as e-books, starting with the West novellas. This post has the cover for "Huntbrother", which will be in wide e-book release shortly. (Apparently there are plans to collect all six West novellas in paper via Lulu eventually.)

If you haven't read "Huntbrother" and are a fan of the West books, I'd encourage you to check out that story out of all of them. It contains some absolutely crucial worldbuilding information, as it follows Cynthia of Maubreche post-The Sacred Hunt (and it's good!). Of course, it being a Michelle West novella, it raises as many questions for the master plot as it answers, but.

TBC review

Wed, 15 Jun 2011 13:30:29 GMT

Posted by: starlady

My continually talking up the West books continues to bear sporadic fruit. megwrites just read The Broken Crown and has an interesting review here. She's trying to decide whether to continue the series, and welcomes spoilers, particularly re: Kiriel.

Looking back on The Sun Sword, as much as I like Valedan, that series really is all about the female characters and how awesome they are. With some Kallandras angst thrown in for good measure, amirite?

Cast in Ruin cover! and a question

Sat, 19 Mar 2011 01:14:50 GMT

Posted by: starlady

Michelle has posted the cover for Cast in Ruin, which will be out in October 2011.

Also, three_weeks_for_dw is happening again this year, and I'm thinking it would be a great thing to get this community a little more content. What kinds of posts/activities/things would people like to see?

So I finally read Cast in Chaos…

My longer review is here, but the short version is, I thought this was one of the best of all the books so far.

I also have ( a spoilery question for those who've read books 5 and 6 )

Still here! with some reviews

Fri, 29 Oct 2010 07:00:15 GMT

Posted by: starlady

So I bought Cast in Chaos the week before I moved across the country to grad school in August and I still haven't read more than the sample chapter. Um, yeah.

But other people have been reading!

oyceter recently posted this review of the first two books of The Sun Sword; and boundbooks has almost reached the end of the series.

I have to admit, as much as I liked The Hidden City and City of Night, they didn't quite hit the heights of Hunter's Death or The Sun Sword for me. I have high hopes for House Name, though, and for the books after that…

( Is gorgeous & under the cut )

A little more info here.

Also, I have to admit, I never pictured the Terafin looking like that. But it is an interpretation I can get behind, for sure.

House War & Elantra chapters, updates

Tue, 06 Jul 2010 22:52:25 GMT

Posted by: starlady

Michelle West has updated her website with the first chapters of the out-now City of Night and the forthcoming Cast in Chaos.

In publication news, House Name is scheduled for January 2011 (yay!), and the next book is in progress and tentatively titled Skirmish. On the Elantra front, Cast in Ruin is in progress as well.

I think this means it's time to start my annual trolling-chain-bookstores-for-the-new-Cast-book ritual.

Also, Michelle's Wordpress is available on DW as michellesagarawest_feed.

Discussion around DW

Fri, 28 May 2010 00:46:31 GMT

Posted by: starlady

In comm business, anyone who has graphics skillz and would like to make a less generic layout for the community, please feel free; I'd be happy to show off your talents. (I have no graphics skillz whatsoever.)

And now for some Sagara West reviews around DW:

wistfuljane recently read The Broken Crown and is partway through The Uncrowned King and has some very interesting thoughts on resonances between West's worldbuilding and the real world, specifically race, gender, culture, and power. (No spoilers beyond TBC, please!)

thistleingrey recently read Cast in Courtlight and has some criticisms of the book as urban fantasy, also quite interesting.

So, to say hello, and celebrate 3W4DW, I have brought 10 icons.

( The Shining Court, The Riven Shield, The Sun Sword, The Hidden City. And a terrible, terrible Beach Boys reference. )

(Not sure how the tagging system is going to work out . . .?)
